Also check out the link to DEPENDENT FILMS which gives you access to all manner of useful documents which could be included in your portfolio - location release forms, risk assessments, script template, storyboarding, contracts etc. You will need to adapt these to use them but they show that you understand how important the planning is and demonstrate your professional approach. Please remind me to give you forms if you are available to help on open evening next Wednesday the 28th of September.

TUESDAY

INSTRUCTIONS

Please read through the rest of the powerpoint and ensure that the work is completed. Clearly we are not able to work on the editing of the footage which you shot last week but you can and MUST complete the survey and the other home learning.

You will also notice that it was our intention to begin the process of developing ideas for your films. You may already have started this and the time has come for you to begin to put these into words so be prepared with good ideas for Friday.

FRIDAY

Lesson will focussed on developing ideas for trailers, looking at the audience research and seeing how this could apply and a practical task involving the cameras and edit.

SURVEYS

IDEALLY, surveys should be embedded into blogs and you should get friends and family to do them online. Then I'd like you to analyse the results perhaps in a graphic form - google docs can help with this. It can of course be done on paper too.

HOME LEARNING

Please ensure that you have written up your notes on your blogs in detail by Tuesday's lesson.

Remember that you are focussed on the Conventions of a trailer, and the specific conventions of the genre used.

Areas which you must comment on:

  • Editing: types of cuts used (straight cut, fades to white or black, dissolves from one image to another), pace of editing, rhythm, whether it mirrors the sound cuts of not, freeze frames and other special editing effects.
  • Sound: diegetic or non-diegetic, use of music (including well know songs), voice over/narration (either by character or the 'deep voiced movie trailer man'), synchronised dialogue
  • Titles and written language: use of titling and credits, use of written language on screen either over picture, black or another background, position timing and font of titling, how narrative, theme or tome are conveyed through the written language (or not), titles for film marketing including credits, representation of institutions, individual etc.
  • Picture: use of camera shots/angles/movement, mise en scene including costume/set/location/lighting etc., acting and moments of drama/comedy/etc. shown, casting (importance of cast and how they feature)
Remember, the more detail you write now the better your research will look later.

OPEN EVENING REQUEST

Open evening is coming up on the 29th of September and this means getting the Media Studies room ready to impress potential students. To do this I need your help both before the day AND on the night.

I know some of you were prepared to help in the holidays and due to a mix up we didn't quite make it happen. Now however is your chance.

There will be two rewards - one in terms of house points and another which may include food or chocolate. However the real reward is knowing that you have done a charitable thing and supported both your school and your subject well. I hope some of you will be willing and able to get involved.

Preparing the room including displays and emptying boxes after school starting next week.

Welcome back

Welcome back to year 11.

Friday's lessons will be about preparing the ground for your Assignment 3 projects.

You will need to be making notes during the lesson on the trailers we watch, and identifying the codes and conventions of both the trailer form and the specific genre of the films.

These notes will need to be transfered into onto your blogs and will in time be written up to go into your portfolio.

The focus on Friday will be CONVENTIONS OF A TRAILER but this doesn't mean that we won't begin to discuss other elements too including camera. lighting, mise en scene, editing, sound and written language.

Brush up on your use of media terms and be prepared to work fast and efficiently.

LATEST ACTION ADVENTURE TRAILERS

Here are some of the latest Action Adventure Trailers - good to view but be warned, they are very CGI (Computer Generated Images) heavy so may not be a particularly good guide to what you should be trying to create.

However, you could think about the planning of the trailer, the way narrative is drip fed to us through the images, dialogue and sound effects. How people and places are represented and how the audience is directly targeted.

I particularly like the first one - Super 8 as it is clearly aimed at a family audience. Think about whose POV we get in each of the trailers and how this helps us to identify the audience. Also make a note of who the Producers, Directors and Executive Producers are. Then look up what else they have done.

Also note the Lego video game advert which I have put in to get you to think about how important Marketing across different media platforms is. The game helping to advertise the Film franchise. And the the film helping to sell the game and also Lego toys. You may get a question which asks you to think about this.

ACTION ADVENTURE FILMS

Tasks for Monday.

  • One group to work on developing 25 word pitch for a new action adventure film and then writing 250 word synopsis.
  • The other group to work on watching an action adventure trailer and writing a short analysis onto their blog.
Here are the links for the watching and analysing group and an example of a pitch and synopsis for the writing group.

Sample log line or short pitch
  • A mechanic shunned for carrying a disease, rescues an android, secretly repairs her, and fights to protect her when she endangers the colony.
Note how the log line includes the protagonist, the genre, the inner conflict, the outer conflict and the climax (without giving it all away).

A Synopsis for The Bourne Ultimatum
  • Matt Damon returns as the trained assassin Jason Bourne for the latest showdown in The Bourne Ultimatum. In the follow-up to 2002's The Bourne Identity and 2004's The Bourne Supremacy - the smash hits that have earned over $500 million at the global box office - acclaimed director Paul Greengrass joins returning cast member Julia Stiles and Joan Allen and new additions David Strathairn, Scott Glenn, Paddy Considine, Edgar Ramirez and Albert Finney.
  • All he wanted was to disappear. Instead, Jason Bourne is now hunted by the people who made him what he is. Having lost his memory and the one person he loved, he is undeterred by the barrage of bullets and a new generation of highly-trained killers. Bourne has only one objective: to go back to the beginning and find out who he was.
  • Now, in this new chapter of espionage series, Bourne will hunt down his past in order to find a future. He must travel from Moscow, Paris, Madrid and London to Tangier and New York City as he continues his quest to find the real Jason Bourne - all the while trying to outmaneuver the scores of cops, federal officers and interpol agents with him in their crosshairs.
  • The Bourne Ultimatum was shot in Morocco, Spain, France, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Note that paragraphs 2 and 3 could be for a new film.

Gcse Aa l1 Genre

NEXT LESSON - MONDAY P4

Key Concepts:

  • Media Forms and Conventions
  • Media Language: visual and aural languages
  • Media Institution
  • Audience
  • Media Representations

Media Forms and Conventions
Genre:

  • the importance of genre as a marketing tool
  • the codes and conventions of the genre
  • the sub genres that constitute the genre, leading to a consideration of hybridity

Our tasks may well involve watching clips and deciding on genre and sub genre, explain reasons for choices based on what we see and hear.

We will also begin the case study of how a specific film is marketed through it's genre.
